Acts 12:18-25 says, "In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there. 20 He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon; they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply. 21 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” 23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died. 24 But the word of God continued to spread and flourish. 25 When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark."
Herod persecutes and touches the church but eventually God touches him and he dies a terrible death
This is the close to Acts 12
Now let me read just the first verse of Acts 13
Acts 13:1 says, "Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas,Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul."
Manean = Prophet + Teacher in the church of Antioch
Brought Up w/Herod the Tetrarch
2 words in English but just 1 word in Greek and it's the only time in the NT that it is used
SYNTROPHOS - suckled by the same breast (LED Wall + TV Screens)
Herod + Manaen were raised together aka Foster Brothers
Grew up in the same house from infancy
Same education. Same opportunities.
One became a persecutor of the church
One became a prophet of the church
Revelation: The environment you grew up in does NOT determine your destiny
Your father might have been an alcoholic that does not mean you have to be
The decisions you make determine your destinations
Every decision has power and momentum to it
Generational Habit
We are reflections of our parents
Children bear the marks of their parents
Physical DNA transfer
Spiritual DNA transfer
Generational transfers of behaviors (good or bad)
Patters get passed down
All throughout the Bible = Abraham & Isaac
New Generation, Same Old Stuff
Negative patterns are easy to pick up
Poverty in families, alcoholism in families, divorce in families
Children absorb what they see, hear and experience
One generation picks it up and always amps it up
Each Herod was worse and worse
I want to shift the focus from their decision to some of our own decisions and how we go about making them
Now to be truthful it makes me feel better to talk about somebody else's decision so I don't have to face my own dysfunction
It's really easy to dissect other people's decisions
They shouldn't let their kids watch that show
They shouldn't wear that brand of clothing
For some reason we get so angry about a speck in someone’s eye while ignoring the log in our own eye
We will gladly call out other’s mistakes while simultaneously covering up our own
We are really good at diagnosing the speck in our brother's eye while we are conveniently ignoring the log in our eye
We know why others made a decision but if we were pressed on why we make some of the decisions we make, I think we might struggle to answer why
Can I take a moment and talk about Godly decision making?
Write this down: every decision has a parent called an emotion. Every emotion is a descendant of a thought.
Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as someone thinks in their heart, so are they.”
Calling Of Jesus
We are reading Acts so we will stay with the same author
Luke 5:11 says, "So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him."
This is a huge decision
They are all in with Jesus
They left everything
Boats and nets = Business
Chain reaction = See blind healed, cast out devils, Lazarus, Resurrection
They didn't just make this big decision out of nowhere
You have to know what happened before verse 11 to understand how they reached the point to leave everything behind and follow Him
Luke 5:1-11
Every time you choose to be gentle to your wife there is a chin reaction
Every time you choose to be present for your children there is a chain reaction
Every time you choose to get down on your knees and pray there is a chain reaction
