The book of Ruth is one of only two books in the Old Testament named after a woman and presents an example of a woman of faith, strength, and kindness. The book is characterized by hope and optimism, describing Ruth and Naomi’s journey from sadness to happiness and from emptiness to fulness¹.
The book tells the story of Ruth, a Moabite woman who married into an Israelite family. After her husband dies, she chooses to stay with her mother-in-law Naomi instead of returning to her own family. Ruth's loyalty and faithfulness to Naomi are rewarded when she meets Boaz, a wealthy landowner who takes an interest in her. Boaz marries Ruth and they have a son named Obed, who becomes the grandfather of King David².
The book of Ruth teaches us about God's providence and care for his people. It also shows us the importance of loyalty, faithfulness, and kindness. The book is often read during the Jewish holiday of Shavuot³.
