The Brood Review 1979 | David Cronenberg | Art Hindle Oliver Reed Samantha Eggar Discussion
"The Brood" (1979) is a psychological horror film directed by David Cronenberg. The film follows a man named Frank Carveth as he becomes entangled in a disturbing series of events surrounding his estranged wife Nola and the unconventional therapy she's undergoing. Nola is a patient of a controversial psychologist named Dr. Raglan, who employs an experimental technique known as "psychoplasmics," which encourages patients to manifest their inner emotions physically.
As Frank investigates his wife's treatment, he discovers that Nola's suppressed rage and trauma have taken a monstrous and deadly form. Mysterious and gruesome deaths begin to occur, linked to Nola and her connection to the therapy sessions. Frank's concern for his daughter's safety intensifies as he realizes that Nola's influence over their child could have dire consequences.
The film delves into themes of repressed emotions, psychological trauma, and the blurred boundaries between the mind and the body. With Cronenberg's signature body horror style, "The Brood" explores the grotesque manifestations of inner turmoil and the destructive potential of suppressed emotions, leading to a chilling and disturbing climax that challenges the limits of psychological horror.
