The Conduct of War: Napoleon's Rules for His Army in Egypt
Napoleon issued General Orders while sailing from Malta to Egypt, outlining the conduct his army should follow upon reaching land. The orders included sealing up public treasures, houses, and revenue collectors' offices. The arrest of Mamluks and requisitioning of their horses and camels was mandated, along with disarming all towns and villages. Napoleon emphasized that soldiers who entered the houses of inhabitants to steal horses or camels would be punished. He also cautioned against provoking a jihad and instructed his men to treat Muslims with respect, similar to how they treated Jews and Italians. Napoleon highlighted the importance of protecting religious leaders like muftis and imams, just as Roman legions protected all religions. He acknowledged cultural differences regarding the treatment of wives but emphasized that rape was universally condemned. Additionally, he mentioned that the first town they would encounter had been founded by Alexander the Great, a fact significant to him personally.
