The French Revolution Comes to Malta: Napoleon's Impact on the Island
On June 10, Napoleon's fleet arrived in Malta, a strategically important location that controlled the entrance to the eastern Mediterranean. He dispatched Junot to demand the surrender of the Grand Master of the Knights of St John, Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim, and the opening of Valletta harbor. Two days later, the Grand Master capitulated, granting access to Napoleon's forces. This was seen as a stroke of luck, as resistance from the Knights would have made it challenging for the army to enter.
During his brief six-day stay in Malta, Napoleon's brief visit to Malta brought about significant changes. He expelled the majority of the Knights, established a governing council, and dissolved monasteries. He introduced modernizations like street lighting and paved roads, reformed institutions, and abolished slavery and feudalism. Napoleon allowed the construction of a previously banned synagogue and set university professors' salaries. He left the island under the leadership of Michel Regnaud de Saint-Jean d'Angély, confident in its newfound strength.
