SPOILER ALERT

In the spy thriller series "Secret Invasion," which features the shape-shifting Skrulls, nothing is what it seems. The shocking death of Maria Hill in the first episode surprised some viewers, while others speculated that it could be a deception similar to CIA Agent Everett K. Ross's apparent death. They expected Hill to be revealed as a Skrull, with the real Maria Hill returning to save Nick Fury in an exciting twist.

However, Cobie Smulders, the actor who portrays Maria Hill, has debunked those theories in an interview with Vanity Fair. Smulders explained that Maria Hill's passing is real, shocking, and carries a human element, despite the potential for Skrull impersonation in the story. As an actor, Smulders found it both sad and challenging to portray the character's demise, noting that she had never died on camera before. She expressed enthusiasm for having a genuine death scene, allowing her to explore new performance opportunities.

While Smulders has been playing Maria Hill since "The Avengers" in 2012, the character has a longer history, first appearing in "New Avengers" #4 (2005) in the comics. As Fury's second-in-command in SHIELD, Hill has been a significant presence in the comics, even assuming the top spot after Fury's apparent death.

However, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Hill has had limited screen time. Apart from a few appearances in "Agents of SHIELD," she has played minor roles in movies such as "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron." Although she has had a few action scenes, her role primarily involved adding gravitas to events and highlighting her importance as SHIELD's Deputy Director.

Despite the disparity between Maria Hill's portrayal in the comics and the live-action adaptations, some fans still hold onto hope that Smulders is being coy and that her character will return after the first episode of "Secret Invasion." Smulders acknowledges that comic book logic opens the door for Hill's potential comeback. However, she asserts her belief that this is the end for Maria Hill, even with the introduction of the multiverse in films like "Spider-Man: Far From Home."

Considering Marvel's penchant for secrecy, it's clear that nothing is as it seems, both behind the camera and on the screen. "Secret Invasion" stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Richard Dormer, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Don Cheadle. The series is currently streaming on Disney+.
