This was pretty annoying. After being quite unsuccessful with only the blade, and blade/polar star combo, I found that mixing the blade with the fireball is much better, for damage and stopping projectiles. Only thing you should worry about is when the mini-cores get too high above or below you. That's when you wait for them to light up, and move out of the way, while still firing to block from other cores.

Another much easier way, which I should have done, is to get the Spur and get the Whimsical Star, as well as the booster. If you don't want Booster 0.8, I'd recommend getting the machine instead, but then you can't get the spur.
