Man of Medan was developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment as the first out of eight planned standalone horror video games in The Dark Pictures Anthology.
The game is played with a cast of five protagonists in a multilinear narrative influenced by a playerโs choice. The several decision-making scenes within the game significantly alter the plot direction and can change the main character relationships, which can lead to any of the five protagonists dying permanently.
Man of Medan takes place in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean near French Polynesia and focuses on four college students and the captain of the Duke of Milan boat. The characters embark on a diving trip to discover the remains of a WWII-era plane but are met with a hostile encounter from a group of modern-day pirates. The pirates force the five protagonists to sail around the seas in search for something called the "Manchurian Gold". As they search for the Manchurian Gold, they come across what they believe is a ghost ship. The protagonists are forced aboard the ship by the pirates and while aboard the ship all characters begin to see visions of phantom creatures.
Man of Medan released on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on August 30, 2019. The game also released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on September 27, 2022, and for Nintendo Switch on May 4, 2023.
