0City of Heroes was a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) developed by Cryptic Studios and was published by NCsoft. Launched on April 28, 2004, the game allowed players to create their own super-powered crime fighters that could team up with others to oppose criminals belonging to various gangs, cults, and secret conspiracies in the fictional Paragon City.
City of Villains was released in 2005 as a stand-alone expansion for City of Heroes, an expansion that did not require the original City of Heroes purchase to work. City of Villains also was playable with the same subscription fee that paid for City of Heroes access after buying City of Villains.
On August 31, 2012, NCsoft terminated its Paragon Studios development team, and ended all production on City of Heroess. The game was officially shut down on November 30, 2012 despite a massive protest by the still-active fanbase.
In April 2019, source code capable of running a City of Heroes server was distributed widely. This made it possible to create City of Heroes servers outside the direct purview of NCSoft and revived interest in the game, which by then had been out of development for seven years. As of August 2020, NCSoft has not moved to have servers based on this source code shut down.
