This was a topic that I had been wanting to do for quite some time. I had a discussion with a member of the Voltaic community, known as ins, who is a longtime veteran of the quake competitive scene. I had decided to do a take on the subject regarding multiplayer arena shooters. There may be some things I may miss or misunderstand. Feel free to bring it up in the comments and add your two cents. It's a genre I love, but it's a genre with problems that have plagued the community for a long time. And the movement based shooters as of today seem to be the new era of fast paced shooters, for better or worse.

Additional Notes:
I forgot to mention Lawbreakers and Splitgate. The latter was a great game that had halo style gameplay with portal mechanics, it was a interesting combination that made for a lot of unique plays. However, after the streamers and audience had lost interest, it lost a huge portion of it's playerbase. Nowadays it has a couple of hundred players daily. But you can still find games during peak hours.

Lawbreakers had a rocky development cycle, and the pro-centric marketing strategy ended up shooting it in the foot, as well as the decision to not make it free-to-play and lack of content on launch, leading to it being dead on arrival. It did however try and do a spin on the genre that was similar to Overwatch and Quake Champions, with heroes and abilities. But the reasons above killed any hope for the game to grow and was eventually shut down.
