“The present contains nothing more than the past and what is found in the effect was already in the cause.”
– Henri Bergson, Creative Evolution
The Determinist’s debut EP is themed around a book published in 1907, in which Henri Bergson proposed new ideas about the nature of time and evolution. More importantly, he wrote some wonderfully poetic things about determinism which The Determinist can now appropriate for artistic purposes without fear of copyright infringement.
‘The present’ nicely reflects the current societal mood with an anxiety-inducing synth and aggressive percussion. A dissonant metallic sound from one of those great new spectral plugins in Live 11 takes it to a new peak of uneasiness midway through ⁕ Bergson’s book encouraged the immoderate impulses of his female contemporaries, according to uptight early 20th century commentators. The track ‘Immoderate impulse’ was designed to provoke similarly indecent urges in all genders, with a body-shaking low end, driving lead and firestorm of granular atmospherics ⁕ Bergson coined the beautiful phrase ‘Élan vital’ (vital force/impulse). The corresponding track has plenty of it, with another discordant Ableton spectral FX sound driving it to a forcefully intense peak ⁕ Reality has a ‘Mobile nature’, according to Bergson, as does track 4: light, bouncy percussion and unorthodox timings keep the foot tapping for 5 minutes without monotony ⁕ ‘The past’ harks back to a simpler age, with straightforward percussion, a familiar arrangement and not much fancy stuff. Avid listeners will notice those new Live FX making a final farewell appearance to bring the EP to a close.
More coming soon from The Determinist, an artist who genuinely doesn’t have a choice in the matter.
