Gerry sits down for a designer interview with Chris McDowall the creator of Osprey Games' The Doomed, and discusses the philosophy he had when bringing the game to life. We dive into his previous gaming and writing experience and how The Doomed became a minimalist mechanic system which still brings complexity and flavour to a narrative wargame in the midst of an apocalypse.
We discuss reducing the statistics, abilities and modifiers of the game to their bare essentials allowing you to focus on the Horrors and Conflicts that you find within the game rules of The Doomed. This in turn leads to exploring the way it matches the aesthetic of the world and encourages collaborative narrative wargaming.
We also discuss how Chris McDowall became a tabletop gamer with his introduction through Games Workshop and how he started playing Warhammer 40K.
