The Story of The Dream Machine
An old man, tired from the routine chores of a day of work in his house, gets ready for a much deserved good night’s sleep. As he climbs unto his bed and pulls over the covers, he puts out the candlelight, closes his eyes in the permeating darkness and restfully sinks into dreams to come…
In his dream, he suddenly regains conscienceness in a hazy, misty fantasy realm. A quick survey of his alien environment alerts him of a pack of dwarfish creatures who seem to be coming after him. Perplexed by the approaching danger, the old man starts running as the creatures fall in pursuit. The chase doesn’t last very long. Due to his advanced years, he becomes exhausted from running and soon the creatures are upon him.
Captured by the little creatures, who tie him up, cover his eyes and drag him after them, the old man is lead to a large dark cave complex, the entrance of which is on the side of some steep hills. He doesn’t witness where he is taken, of course. In the cave, which in fact appears to be a gem mine, the old man is released from his bonds and is forced to work like a slave. He involuntarily but submissively labours to extract precious stones with a pickaxe and carry them by himself to another location in the mine. The creatures who ruthlessly supervise him, deny the old man any moment of rest. His dream has turned into a nightmare. Being shown no mercy and feeling the tolls of excessive physical strain, the old man senses his stamina reach an end and collapses in fatigue.
When he regains awareness, he doesn’t remember how much time has elapsed since he fainted. He quickly scans the area, but he can see no sign of the little creatures. Was it all a dream in his dream? The cave is totally deserted and he is abandoned inside. The only aid for his survival is a torch that illuminates the interior. Picking up the torch as his only hope of exit from this hell, he begins to wander the caverns. The eerie and labyrinth-like corridors of the cave echo his quiet footsteps as the old man looks for the way out.
A number of times, he comes back to the point where he has started before. Discouraged from his repeated failures, the old man becomes desperate but doesn’t give up his efforts. He must get out of this place, as the torch is slowly growing fainter. On his last try before surrendering to his fate, he suddenly notices the flames of the torch swerve, which indicate a draft. Jubilant with relief, he runs towards the direction of the airflow and sees light. He finally has found the exit, he drops the torch and literally jumps out of the cave.
The old man slowly and painfully opens his dimmed eyes in the glare. The rising sun from across the room is shining in its entire splendour. Another glorious day has begun!..
