1. Go to Windhelm and talk to Aventus Aretino. He will ask you to kill Grelod the Kind
2. Go to Riften and kill Grelod
3. Travel back to Aventus and talk to him
4. Find some place to rest(go to sleep)
5. Kill one of the captives when you wake up, and you will be able to join the Dark Brotherhood
