Looking back now, I understand this game much better. Androids created YorHa androids to fight a meaningless war in a never-ending spiral of life and death, for a lie that keeps propagating it. While the former androids have a will of their own, YorHa Androids have no control over their fate since they were built to be living weapons.
A2 escaped this spiral and chose a new fate in betraying YorHa when she discovered that the humans they were sworn to protect, were in fact extinct.
2B grew distant, stoic from heartbreak over killing 9S again and again when he came close to discovering the lie behind YorHa, forced to continue the spiral of life and death.
9S grew nihilistic from the combination of discovering the truth that rendered YorHa meaningless, and witnessing the loss of 2B, the female android he loved and cared for.
With YorHa gone, the tower destroyed, and the machine network gone, the meaningless machine war was over. In spite of this, Pods 042 and 153 evolved, gained sentience and found purpose in continuing to protect A2, 2B, and 9S by repairing them and bringing them back to life, free from a meaningless war. Free from an endless spiral of life and death. Free from YorHa.
Free...to choose their own fate...
