Horror and interactive mediums have a complicated relationship. On the one hand, pitting the player against unknown terrors allows for an immersive and dread inducing experience, but this so easily runs the risk of repetition and annoyance. In this video I talk about Frictional Games's seminal existential horror effort SOMA, and explain what it does so well to keep that sense of fright even when played in 'Safe Mode'
