The First Home Console Port of Tetris Shouldn't Have Existed
Tetris is a famous game that's ported to pretty much everything that has a CPU. However, when the game is mentioned, it's most commonly the official Game Boy and NES versions that come up first. While the NES is known for having two distinct versions of the game on its platform (the official Nintendo version and unlicensed Tengen version), a third, often forgotten Famicom version exists. Not only did it come out before Tengen's version, but it was also the very first home console port, period. However, its existence wasn't supposed to happen; it all comes down to an early bout of miscommunication, and its existence was the spark that began Tetris's infamous legal battles in the first half of 1989.
This video takes a little dive into the game itself, how differently it plays compared to the more famous NES versions, and touches on its legacy.
