Road & Track Presents: The Need For Speed - not the sort of beginning you’d expect for a series that went on to take over the world with the likes of Need For Speed Underground, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, and - soon - Need For Speed Unbound. But that’s how this series began.

I was just going to play Need For Speed on 3DO for a bit, but it turned out there’s a more interesting history to the first game than I first realised. So here it is: a bit of a retrospective on the first Need For Speed.

The examples of racing games from 1994 are:

Top left - Lamborghini American Challenge (SNES, Amiga, etc)
Top right - NASCAR Racing (PC, PS1)
Bottom left - Mario Andretti Racing (Mega Drive/Genesis)
Bottom right - Stunt Car FX (SNES)
Centre - Checkered Flag (Jaguar)
Arcade game - Ace Driver (Arcade)
