What Happened To The Car Combat Genre?

I really love Twisted Metal 2. I’m hugely fond of Vigilante 8. There’s a part of me that genuinely likes Carmageddon a lot. There was an era when car combat games (and Carmageddon) were big - where it got to the point where some of the biggest licences in the world were doing their own games in the genre. It was a surprisingly big genre, is what I’m saying - as well as one I loved.
And then it just… faded away. We got a new Twisted Metal in 2012 on PS3, and there are other games - mainly indies/smaller productions - carrying the car combat torch. But generally speaking, this is a genre that all but died. Will the Twisted Metal TV show revive it? Probably not, but hey at least it’s got Samoa Joe in it.
