Did you know that the first web search engine was created before the World Wide Web itself? In this video, we will explore the origins and evolution of web search engines, from Archie to Google.

The first search engine in the Internet was Archie, launched in 1990 by Alan Emtage, Bill Heelan and Peter Deutsch at McGill University in Montreal. Archie browsed through an index of downloadable files, but did not show the actual content. The first web search engine that could crawl, index and search the World Wide Web was W3Catalog, released in 1993 by Oscar Nierstrasz at the University of Geneva. Another early web search engine was JumpStation, developed by Jonathon Fletcher in 1993.

These pioneers paved the way for more advanced and popular search engines, such as Yahoo!, AltaVista, Lycos, Excite, Infoseek and WebCrawler. In 1996, two Stanford students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, started working on a new search engine called BackRub, which later became Google. Google revolutionized web search with its PageRank algorithm, which ranked web pages based on their relevance and popularity.

Today, Google dominates the web search market, with over 90% of global market share. Other competitors include Bing, Baidu, Yandex and DuckDuckGo. Web search engines have become an essential part of our daily lives, helping us find information, entertainment, products and services online.
