The internet has no single inventor or date of origin. Rather, it is the result of decades of research and innovation by many scientists and engineers from different countries and organizations. Some of the most important milestones in the history of the internet are:
- In 1969, two research teams at UCLA and Stanford created the first two-node network using packet switching, a method of breaking data into small pieces and sending them across different routes. This was the first demonstration of ARPANET, a project funded by the U.S. Department of Defense to create a resilient communication system in case of a nuclear attack.
- In 1973, computer scientists Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn proposed TCP/IP, a set of rules for data transfer using packet switching. TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol, and it is still the basis of how data moves on the internet today.
- In 1983, ARPANET switched to using TCP/IP, marking the official birth of the internet as we know it. By then, ARPANET had grown to include hundreds of computers from universities, research centers, and military sites around the world.
- In 1990, Tim Berners-Lee, a British physicist working at CERN, invented the World Wide Web, a system of linking documents and resources using hypertext and URLs. He also created the first web browser, web server, and web page. The World Wide Web made the internet more accessible and user-friendly for the general public.
