More Info:

Along with the normal boost from referencing real world events that people are obsessed with, the games marketing also benefited enormously from good timing (the 60th anniversary of D-Day was the following year) and the unashamed copying of moments directly from VERY popular films and series at the time (Enemy at the Gates, Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan)

Despite being released late in the year it still cracked the top ten in sales and went on to win 90 Game of the Year awards and 50 Editor's Choice Awards.

An expansion released the following year (United Offensive) added multiplayer content and so from 2004 the basics of “COD” as we knew it before the addition of Warzone were in place.

Fun Facts:

---- The first game used 1.4 gigs of space. Modern warfare 3 (the 20th game released in November 2023) is expected to need close to 100gb.

--- Call of Duty: Roman Wars was a canceled third and first-person video game in the Call of Duty franchise. The game was set in ancient Rome, and allowed players to take control of famous historical figure Julius Caesar, along with "low grunts", and officers of the Tenth Legion. It was eventually canceled, as Activision had uncertainties about branding it as a Call of Duty title.

--- After disputes saw them leave EA to found Infinity Ward the devs were bankrolled by Activision and encouraged to make a “Medal of Honor killer” (The internal title of the Call of Duty during development). Later two of the founders left Infinity Ward after disputes with Activision and formed Respawn games which created Titanfall for EA which deeply cut into Call of Duties audience and business resulting in rather large lawsuits.
