299The history of Curse of Doom/Bane of Doom/Doom
Formerly known as Curse of Doom, This spell is taken from Warcraft 3's Pitlords ultimate skill called "Doom", where the targeted unit would take a large amount of damage over time and would ,no matter what, die from the effect, spawning a doomguard in its place. But the spell could not be cast on heros which also transfered over to wow.
In Curse of dooms first form it was a 1 minute long dot that only did damage once at the end of its duration, kind of like living bomb excpet without the aoe. At the and of Dooms duration it also had a chance to summon a doomgaurd and could not be used on other players.
In catacyslm it was changed to be called bane of Doom, because you can only use 1 curse at a time and most warlocks had to choose weather or not to use a debuff curse or one of their dots. So they changed all the dots to "Bane" and left all the curses as debuffs. In additon to its name change, it would now do damage every 15 seconds instead of just once at the end of its duration, and each tick had a chance to summon an imp instead of a doomgaurd.
In mists, Bane of doom was renamed to just Doom and was changed to be a demo exclusive ability that is only usalable in metamorphisis, replaces corruption, and no longer has a 1 target rescrition. It still lasts 1 minute and each tick now summons a wild imp whenever it crits. Because of its long duration and the ability to summon imps upon crits, Trinkets like the Unearing vision of Lei shen, which gives you 100% crit for 4 seconds, made warlock extremly powerful, combined with glyph of Everlasting Affliction and Pandemic, Demo locks could get a doom dot up to 2 minutes long that alwys crit and summoned imps.
They Do have a version of oldschool curse of doom in the game in the form of a battle pet ability. What it does is put the curse on the target and then after 5 rounds will tick once for a ton of damage, but without the chance to summon a doomgaurd.
