The show starred Greta Gerwig as Sally, a free-spirited woman going through a divorce while navigating life and love in New York City. Unlike HIMYM, which centered around a tight-knit friend group, How I Met Your Dad would introduce a new ensemble, including actors Drew Tarver, Nick D’Agosto, and Meg Ryan as the narrator. With Carter Bays and Craig Thomas—the creators of HIMYM—on board, expectations were high.
However, CBS ultimately passed on the series, citing creative differences. The network reportedly wanted significant reshoots, but the producers refused, leading to the project’s cancellation. Fans were left wondering what could have been, especially after HIMYM’s divisive finale left many eager for redemption.
Years later, a second attempt at a spinoff finally materialized with How I Met Your Father, starring Hilary Duff. Though it lasted two seasons, it failed to capture the magic of the original and was canceled in 2023.
