In 1906, the Bronx Zoo committed one of the most disturbing acts in American history—it placed a human being on display. His name was Ota Benga, a Congolese man whose tragic story remains a haunting example of racism, exploitation, and cruelty disguised as science.
Ota Benga was a member of the Mbuti people from the Congo, taken from his homeland after his village was attacked. An American businessman and so-called explorer, Samuel Verner, brought him to the U.S. as part of an exhibition for the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. Later, Benga was sent to New York, where he was placed in the Bronx Zoo—inside the Monkey House, alongside primates.
Crowds gathered daily to gawk at him, encouraged by zookeepers who allowed Benga to roam the exhibit, sometimes holding a chimpanzee. Newspapers referred to him as "a missing link" between humans and apes, a deeply racist narrative used to justify mistreatment. Though he initially tried to resist, his reality was one of humiliation and isolation.
Public outcry eventually forced the zoo to release Benga, but freedom did not bring happiness. He was moved to an orphanage in Virginia, where he tried to build a new life, but his trauma and longing for home never faded. In 1916, at the age of 32, Ota Benga took his own life.
His story remains one of the darkest moments in American history—a brutal reminder of the cruelty inflicted under the guise of progress. Over a century later, his name serves as a symbol of resilience and the fight for human dignity. The Bronx Zoo has since acknowledged this horrifying chapter, but the scars of the past can never be erased.
