From Corbyn to Trump, populism has rejected established political elites. Some think a return to ideology and emotion is a dangerous backward step, others that this means the alternatives have failed. Is populism on both the left and the right something to be celebrated or feared? Can giving more power to the people bring about positive, lasting change? Or is the only safe way to make progress to give it all to those that know best?

Anna Soubry: Anna Soubry is MP for Broxtowe in Nottinghamshire and a member of the Independent Group. A qualified barrister, Soubry worked as a journalist before moving into politics in the mid-2000s. An ardent Remainer, she has a history of reasoned opposition to the dangers of xenophobia, with the New Statesman touting her as a happy example of a politician "who trades in facts not prejudices". Having threatened repeatedly to leave the Conservative Party on account of its leadership's Brexit stance, she defected to the newly formed Independent Group in February of this year.
