The Iron Cross: Complete History of Prussia's Most Famous Military Decoration (1813-1945)
0The Iron Cross is one of the most widely recognised military decorations throughout the world. The story behind its origins brings us back to the Napoleonic wars. In 1813, Prussian King Frederick William III waged war against Napoleon and issued a new military decoration available to all those that distinguished themselves in service to the Prussian state. The award was revolutionary because it was available to all men: common soldiers and officers.
The Iron Cross was revilatized during the Franco-Prussian war which unified Germany, the First World War which led to the downfall of the German Empire, and the Second World War. Adolf Hitler himself earned an Iron Cross during the First World War, and when Nazi Germany invaded Poland he created an additional military decoration: the Ritterkreuz, or Knight's Cross.
