The Jim Carrey Remake That Never Happened
The 1964 film The Incredible Mr. Limpet told the whimsical story of Henry Limpet, a mild-mannered man who adored sea creatures. After falling into the ocean, he magically transformed into a fish, embarking on an underwater adventure. The film starred Don Knotts in the title role, a perfect fit given his fame as the bumbling yet lovable Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show.
In 1998, Warner Bros. attempted to bring Mr. Limpet back to the big screen with a high-profile remake starring Jim Carrey. At the time, Carrey was one of Hollywoodâs biggest stars, fresh off a string of box office hits. The project was initially set to be written and directed by Steve Oedekerk, who helmed Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, but he exited the film in 1999.
Thatâs when rising animation legend Brad Bird, who would later direct The Incredibles and Ratatouille, stepped in for discussions. However, Warner Bros. ultimately pulled the plug, citing excessive production costs. The only surviving remnant of the scrapped remake is a rare 20-second test clip featuring Jim Carrey as a CGI version of Mr. Limpet.
Though the reboot never came to fruition, The Incredible Mr. Limpet remains a cult classic, while its near-remake stands as one of Hollywoodâs many âwhat could have beenâ stories.
