The King of Fighters 99 Evolution - Intro
After finishing the Orochi Saga with KOF '97 and giving us the magnificent KOF '98, SNK embarked on a new chapter of KOF that represented a "clean slate" by starting the so-called "NESTS Chronicles" and renewing the gameplay mechanics. KOF '99 bets on a new hero K', who takes on the leading role of Kyo (with the latter having a secondary role), and new characters such as Maxima, Whip, Bao, or those from Fatal Fury, such as Li Xiangfei, respecting the backbone of the KOF world (except for the notable absence of Goro). This installment also sees the appearance of Kyo clones, more out of the need to satisfy the demands of players to play with previous versions of the hero from the Orochi saga, than for story.
The gameplay innovations are translated into two completely opposite game systems that replace the advanced/extra modes: the "counter" mode (similar in part to the MAX POW mode of previous games) and the "armor" mode (which, as its name indicates, provides benefits to the defense of our character). Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, but unlike previous games they are not discriminatory, so any of them can be activated indifferently as long as we have 3 POW points. Another important novelty is the implementation of the "Strikers" system with the new teams of four characters, one of which assumes the role of "official assistant" or "striker", in a mechanic that replaces the friendly assistance seen in previous KOF games. Although its call is limited, it can participate in combat practically at any time, thus benefiting from greater dynamism in combat. Finally, emergency evasion has been completely altered, being more oriented to offensive play thanks to "moving attack".
