Welcome Campers!

This is Course 3 of my Friday the 13th NES Master Class. Today we're going to discuss how to make the lake free and easy by blocking Jason from appearing with his unavoidable damage. We do this by combining two strategies that I call the Buddy Crow and the 43/33 method.

My ultimate goal for this series of Friday the 13th NES guides is to help anyone, whether they're an experienced Friday the 13th NES player, or a first timer, pick up this underrated gem and play it through without any of the fumbling around and trying to figure things out that weren't explained. I've learned a lot about the inner workings of this game since I started speedrunning Low% (rock only, no items), and that evolved into doing challenges suggested by other fans of the game (like the Immortal Challenge, no Map, beat the game without pressing left, etc).

I'd also like to give a huge thank you to Rossy for the information on the Buddy Crow. I knew that the crow could block spawns, but Rossy was able to dig into the code of the game and find out the actual spawn patterns. That was huge, because I was doing hitless attempts at the time, and the lake was such a huge reset point. Everything was going great until about 5 or 6 weeks ago, when I lost a hitless George only run halfway through day 3 because of Jason popping up before the crow. I had already started working on this Friday the 13th NES guide and didn't want to share incomplete information, so I tinkered around until figuring out the 43/33 method, and everything came together! I've done quite a few tests to see if there are any other times Jason will pop up on the lake, and I haven't been able to find any others. If you do see him outside of what I discuss in this guide, please let me know and I'll do some digging!
