Fallout 3 takes place in the same post-apocalyptic world as other Fallout games, in the year 2277—200 years after the nuclear war of 2077. Like previous games in the series, Fallout 3 features a network of underground vaults built by the Vault-Tec corporation, ostensibly to save a portion of the American population from the effects of the war. The game's protagonist, the Lone Wanderer, spent his childhood in Vault 101, isolated from the outside world, near Washington, D.C., the US capital. When his father unexpectedly leaves the shelter, the Lone Wanderer sets out to find him.
