THE ENEMY OF MY ENEMY
Ellie has to deal with a large group of David men as she makes her way back to the Swirls store where she left Joel, with Callus. With some pursuing her, she by chance gains a bow (the first time she has a bow in the overall narrative). Avoiding some and taking down others, she makes her way through the venting ducts towards a sports store. There she turns attracts some Infected towards a group of the marauders, so that they mostly kill each other. She then climbs and drops into an electrical store, turning another pack of Infected and marauders on each other. Having cleared them, she climbs to the upper level and lifts and lower a store shutter to enter the part of the mall leading back towards Joel. There Ellie faces the largest group of marauders, while preventing them from breaking the lock and getting to Joel and Callus.
ESCAPE FROM LIBERTY GARDENS
Having alerted a horde of Infected, Ellie and Riley frantically run to get away and get out of the mall. They have many close encounters, including Ellie having to kick and Infected off herself, then stab one which is attacking Riley.
PRESENT DAY
Ellie at last gets back to Joel, medical kit in hand, and stitches up his open wound from when he was impaled. Having tethered him to a stretcher, rides away with Callus dragging Joel behind.
PAST
Ellie and Riley see a window they can exit from and climbing some scaffolding nearly make it. However Ellie falls and is leapt upon and becomes bitten, Riley jumps down to help only to get attacked and bitten herself, Ellie cuttng the throat of the Infected attacking Riley with her knife. Realising their expected fate, they agree to wait it out together.

Left Behind tells the story of Ellie and Riley, portrayed by Ashley Johnson and Yaani King respectively. For the entirety of the DLC, the player controls Ellie.
Left Behind features 2 distinct non-linear timelines, which in some ways thematically link to each other. One is set during the events of the main story, in the aftermath of the ambush at the Colorado University which left Joel (Troy Baker) severly injured, following being impaled upon a metal pole. She learn how Ellie (Ashley Johnson) cared for Joel alone, finding an adandoned mall unit in which to leave him while she desperatly searches for medical supplies with which to heal him, including stitching his open wound. While doing so she has to cope both with Infected and more hunters out to kill her and Joel. Ellie eventually gets away a moves Joel to the townhouse location which for a while let's them hideout while Joel heals.
The other timeline is set in the past, about 3 weeks before Ellie met Joel. Ellie is awoken by Riley (Yanni King) who encourages her to sneak out of Ellie's Boston military boarding school and explore a nearby shopping mall with her. Riley has learned has electricity once it is switched back on. Ellie is frustrated by her and reluctant as RIley disappeared without a word leaving her alone. They enjoy each other's company in a variery of escapades. Riley tells Ellie she has been recruited by Marlene into the Fireflies and has to leave Boston tomorrow. Ellie supports her decision while not wanting her to go, have argued at first, as it is what Riley has wanted all along. There is a frisson between them aluding to their relationship having the potential to be more than friends, until while sharing a dance atop a lit up glass display case in an electronic stores, Ellie sincerely tears up and begs Riley not to go, planting a brief kiss on her lips. Riley receives this positively, tearing off her Firely tag, however are immediately chased by a horde of Infected. Having almost outrun them, both girls are bitten. Ellie comes to learn she is immune, setting up the events of the main story. Riley's ultmate fate is unknown, however presumably succumbed to the infection, as Ellie later talk of her dying.
