Plot

Set roughly one hundred years before Breath of the Wild, the game begins when King Rhoam learns that Calamity Ganon will soon escape his bindings and wreak havoc on Hyrule. This inspires him to send his daughter Zelda and her assigned protector Link on a journey to recruit new champions and train their unique abilities to defeat Calamity Ganon once and for all. Despite their best efforts, Calamity Ganon manages to kill all four champions and mortally wound Link by seizing control of Hyrule's army of mechanized Guardians. Zelda is forced to put Link in a Sheikah-built restoration chamber before sealing herself and Calamity Ganon away within the ruins of Hyrule Castle in what would become known as the Great Calamity.

While the events of Breath of the Wild carry on the story from this point, Age of Calamity takes place in an alternate timeline created by Terrako, a diminutive Guardian that served as Zelda's childhood companion. Awakened from stasis by the emergence of Zelda's latent divine powers, Terrako uses their unique ability to time travel back to a few weeks before the onset of Great Calamity in the hopes of saving Zelda. Thanks to Terrako's intervention, Zelda, Link, and the champions manage to change their fates and defeat Calamity Ganon, creating an entirely new timeline wherein the Great Calamity never occurred.
