The Life Story Of Cliff Byfield - 100 Year Old Car Builder
In todays video we sit down with car builder and local legend Cliff Byfield. Cliff has celebrated his 100th birthday this year and we got the opportunity to sit down with him and get an insight into his life story witch heavily involved building custom cars. So strap yourself in for a long video.
Growing up in the small town Northam Western Australia during the depression, Cliff was expected to start his working life early. He started his coachbuilding apprenticeship in the late 30's only to be interrupted by the second world war. He set off and did his duty to our country starting in the army and then the air force as a gunner on a Lancaster.
After the war he came home, finished his apprenticeship and promptly started his own coachbuilding business. They built truck bodies as the main workload but also built race car body's, motorcycle racing cowls etc.
We actually got to bring Barry in on the interview who was Cliff's first apprentice. They are still good mates and Barry just popped in to use the workshop. He was able to tell us a couple of great stories about working with Cliff. Through all this Cliff always had a Byfield special on the go in the background. Over the years he has made many cars with the Byfield spin on it. Weather it be a whole new custom build or working with something as a base.
Cliff chatted about his current project, which is a Alvis Car that he is repairing for a friend with all new structure and panels that are all hand crafted to perfection. However, Cliff has his eye fixed on the new project, which is a 1932 Singer car that has knowns about. He his trying to get this project finished, so he can move on to the next one.
Cliff gave us a tour of his workshop and how he gained the machinery within it to do the work he needs to do and the story of how he got this equipment is remarkable in deed.
This man is a legend and his so much knowledge to share, his grandson Alex works with Cliff every day learning the craft from a Master craftsman in this field.
Do yourself a flavour and head the to the Motor Museum of WA at Whiteman Park. Ask the staff to show you the Byfield Special cars and then see the legendary craftsmanship of Cliff Byfield for yourself. The Motor Museum of WA is open every day from 10am to 4pm.
Cliff Byfield is 100 years old but act like he has other 20 more years of project buildering to go. You are never to old to continue building cars and Cliff is living proof this for sure.
