Episode 4

In this fourth episode of The Long Dark I almost die yet again. I start off in the farmhouse and salvage some water from the toilet. I'm guessing this came from the tank and not the bowl, as the game said it was "clean" and ok to drink. The farmhouse was very nice but I ran out of food again. I did manage to find some in the cellar below the farmhouse. This is accessible from outside the farmhouse.

I end up leaving the farmhouse in search for food in very cold weather. I try many times to light a fire in a semi covered area but it fails. I panic a bit and head down a road and seek cover in a car on the side of the road. I do find some food but the car is too cold to stay in. I head back into the blizzard and eventually stumble upon a barn in the whiteout. This does have some food (2 cans of yummy dog food) and this is where the episode ends.

The Farmstead is found at the back of a dead orchard, near the side of the river. It consists of a derelict barn, a grain silo, and a large Farmhouse with an externally accessed basement. The silo cannot be entered. There is also an abandoned car on the property. Some distance behind the farmstead is another broken stable with a chance to spawn a hunting rifle, as well as usually having a frozen corpse and a small amount of supplies.

The Farmhouse itself has three points of entry as well as a basement accessed through a bulkhead door on the side of the building. The front door is enclosed by a roofed porch that usually contains some loot. The porch is very useful as it is not uncommon for a bear to spawn directly outside of the house. The bear can be shot and killed from inside the safety of the porch, and this is by far the simplest and safest method of taking it down.

The interior of the Farmhouse is quite spacious with two bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, study, and three bedrooms. There are two fire sources, a lot of containers for storing surplus tools and supplies, and a toilet in each bathroom containing a good amount of potable water. There is a work bench in the basement for crafting and several beds to use for warming up and resting.

Several useful tools and supplies can also be found in both the main house and the basement, including two chances for a hunting rifle to spawn either in the study, or underneath the bed in the master bedroom. A few rounds of ammo can usually be found scattered around the house as well. A large amount of the furniture can be broken down for a lot of reclaimed wood and cloth where needed.

It is a tactical choice for a base because of the size, the large amount of loot, and the inclusion of beds, fireplaces, and a work bench. However, it is a fair distance away from other buildings, so travel may take longer.

Be wary of bears near this location, as there is a den not very far away and the bear tends to wander.

The Pleasant Valley Outbuildings consist of several derelict structures and a Barn. The barn is an important source of supplies and makes for a decent base. It provides a fire barrel, a workbench, and a truck that can be slept in. However, the overall temperature in the barn is not very warm, so it may be too cold to stay in for players who are wearing poor quality clothing. There is also a target with simple arrows stuck in it and broken arrows lying below it.
