Sir Francis Drake was an English explorer and privateer in the 16th century.
In 1577, he led a raid against Spanish settlements in South America and loaded a large amount of treasure onto his ship the Pelican.
However, on the return voyage in 1579 the Pelican began leaking badly.
To lighten the load, Drake is said to have buried some of the treasure on an uncharted island off the coast of modern-day California.
The location was supposedly recorded in logs and maps that have since been lost.
Despite many searches, Drake's buried treasure from the Golden Hind/Pelican has never been reliably found.
The fate of the plundered treasure remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of the age of exploration and piracy on the high seas.
