The Malleus Maleficarum Explored. Audio Book. Development of witchcraft doctrine and common belief
0The widespread recognition of the Malleus Maleficarum in the English-speaking world is largely due to the accessibility of the Montague Summers translation. However, as frequently pointed out, this translation has significant flaws. Notably, Summers relied on much later Latin editions, which diverged considerably from the original text. For this book, my primary source of the Latin text has been the 1991 photographic reprint of the first edition of the Malleus (1487), complemented by the 1519 Jean Marion edition. I have preserved the original Latin throughout the notes and, where necessary, included the alternative Latin from the 1519 edition in brackets when noting apparent errors. The English translations are my own, and I take full responsibility for them, though I have benefited from the insights and guidance of Professors Barbara Gold and Carl Rubino of Hamilton College’s Classics Department, as well as the meticulous revisions from the readers for Manchester University Press.
