"The Masque of the Red Death" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1842. The story takes place in a secluded abbey where Prince Prospero and his wealthy courtiers have taken refuge from a deadly plague known as the "Red Death." They hold a masquerade ball in the abbey's seven interconnected rooms, each decorated in a different color, with the final room being draped in black and decorated to resemble a tomb. However, despite their attempts to isolate themselves from the outside world, the Red Death eventually finds its way into the abbey, and one by one, the revelers begin to fall victim to the disease. The story is known for its symbolism and allegory, particularly regarding the inevitability of death and the futility of trying to escape it.
