So it turns out that this rebel group has an incredibly abstract password system. Four layers of abstraction if I remember correctly and I'm not certain I would have solved any layers without some gentle nudging in the correct direction there. I think actually seeing the circle of animals would have at least told me what I was trying to solve which I imagine would have helped.
