The Mystic Dragoons - Part 2/8 - PS1 - ミスティックドラグーン ~ A Drunken Lion
The Mystic Dragoons is one of the numerous PS1 JRPGs that were never released in English. The game was made by Xing Entertainment -- who also made Meremanoid and Guardian Recall for the PS1, but it is not a company renowned for their high-quality titles. I thought, however, that Mystic Dragoons was a fairly standard JRPG that had some nice ideas up its sleeve; but that were unfortunately poorly implemented. During battles, there's a circle besides each character's and enemy's names that usually goes from yellow to red. If you get paralyzed and do not attack for some turns, the circle will turn to green. Green means you will hit with 100% accuracy (you cannot miss), while yellow gives you 70% and red 50%. Since having a green circle is fairly rare unless you cast a spell that keeps you in the green for a few turns, attacks miss quite often in this game. Unfortunately, some special attacks and spells will always miss against bosses, no matter your circle's color. Battles also take place on the ground or in the air when you're riding your dragon. Air battles are considerably easier, since dragon breath attacks always hit all enemies at once and require no MP. Most of the game takes place on the ground, though. Beyond that, the game is fairly easy... except for that one sequence of three boss battles in a row towards the end of the game that required that I grind for a few hours. The story involves time-traveling shenanigans, which I always enjoy, and you'll find some of the same characters in two different eras with 30-year age gaps, for example. You'll also be helping some war generals in one era, but fight them in the next. I was also surprised at the number of characters that die in here - often suddenly and brutally. The music is one the game's low points. It's not usually enjoyable, and sometimes it's downright grating. What kind of battle music is that!? However, the graphics are cute and the artwork by Sachiko Kamimura is fantastic. The game took me over 30 hours to beat, and ultimately, I enjoyed my time with it!
