The first game in the popular Need for Speed series, this was the only one to license the "Road & Track" name, making the full title "Road & Track presents The Need for Speed". The graphics are extremely detailed, making use of 3D-modelled tracks. Three camera angles are available – in-car, tail, and heli – but I find in-car to be the most immersive. Great pains were taken to make the sound effects realistic, down to the sound of the gear shift in each vehicle. The game will only play in SVGA mode if it detects a Pentium processor, and defaults to VGA mode otherwise. Only the Autumn Valley track is available in the shareware demo. There are 7 tracks and 9 drivable cars in this game, with only one car and track playable in the shareware version.
