Understanding a pawn structure is key to navigating chess middlegames successfully. When you know the ideas, patterns, piece placement and common attacking plans, everything is easy. You save time and have an easy time recognizing opportunities.

This game was a textbook Karlsbad structure in which I've managed to implement the most common plan - a minority attack. My opponent really didn't do much to prevent it, and, once the undermining of black's queenside was complete, I managed to dominate the position by controlling the c5 square. This is why knowing what to do in certain pawn structures is so powerful. I barely spent any time calculating!
