The Origin of Retroviruses - Another Origins Problem For Evolutionary Theory & Naturalism!
28There exist numerous unsolvable problems for evolutionary theory. One of these many problem has to do with the origin and evolution of retroviruses. There is a chicken and egg problem associated with the origin of retroviruses for those that hold to naturalism. Retroviruses require hosts to replicate. In light of this reality, the important question is: what came first? The retrovirus or the host? This is a challenge that advocates of evolutionary theory have failed to provide a satisfactory answer.
The Biblical creation model provides the superior explanation. In the beginning, God front-loaded the original created kinds (created archetypes) with a variety of functional DNA elements. One class of these functional DNA units are endogenous retroviruses. Harmful retroviruses originated from host genomes due to degeneration, mutations, and errors in the packing and recombination process. This means retroviruses were once part of the genetic content of living organisms. They may have come from created units of DNA function (such as ERVs and mobile genetic elements). Harmful retroviruses may have escaped healthy cellular control processes. From here, they can leave their original host genome and cross into foreign hosts where the new host is incapable of regulating the invading retrovirus. This can lead to disease.
