The original Silverstone circuit opened in 1948 and hosted the first British Grand Prix of the modern era. The race track was created at the Silverstone Airfield and used the airfield runways as part of the track. This 5.9 km long circuit was used only once in 1948, after which it underwent a layout change that no longer used the runways.
