1,324It has been 10 years since the Filipino government signed a peace deal with the separatist group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). The government promised autonomy and development for the Bangsamoro region. In return, the MILF pledged to decommission their troops.
But recently, the peace agreement is fraying at the edges, with the army and MILF forces clashing in November 2022. The MILF has complained that promised economic reforms and aid have not arrived, while the government says the MILF are slow in disarming.
In one year, the region will elect its own government. As time is running out to complete the terms of the deal, will peace hold? Or will failed promises threaten the fragile truce?
