I honestly do not know how this happened. The Pope army besieged Rome and I sallied my army forth to attack. I lost the battle and hence my forces in the city were destroyed. So normally when the garrison army is defeated the enemy would automatically take the settlement right? But in this case, the Pope somehow did not take it and was STILL besieging my settlement until I ended the turn.
