[some visual, no-context spoilers] Why do we always want stories to end a certain way? Why do we still think the main character will die when we watch movies? When an ending doesn't match up to our preconceived notions, how do we respond? Ambiguous endings give us the opportunity to become children again, trying our best to make sense of the world around us. Square Enix, during the golden age of Final Fantasy, gave us some very good examples of this.

Spoilers for: Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy VIII, Paranoia Agent, City Hunter, Signal, LOST, Pan's Labyrinth, Journey, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Inception, No Country for Old Men, Twilight.

Sorry about the spoilers, but I didn't know of any other way to talk about this topic without including the endings of shows, movies or games. For what it's worth, the only people who will know that there are even spoilers are people who've already watched them.
