The Problem With The Videogame Industry - Part 9, Triple A Development Is Unsustainable
The production cost of triple A videogames has been a conversation that has circulated on the occasion in the industry for a long time. The high base prices of games has gotten worse with industry practices such as overpriced collector's editions, physical and digital deluxe editions, DLC, season passes, microtransactions, and post launch "game of the year" editions.
Now with the announcement that one of most successful yearly sports franchises with the 2K basketball series will be releasing on PS5 and Xbox Series X with a $10 price increase not including tax over the standard $60 price tag, it raises much concern over the future of gaming in the eyes of the paying consumer. If gamers continue supporting practices such as this, where does the money gouging stop? If triple A videogames are so expensive to produce, should they even have a large budget to begin with? If lower graphics quality and less content needs to be the focus then should gamers set their expectations for the new generation lower than what it has been in the past for previous generations?
If you ask me, there's too many concerning questions that can be raised on this one subject which is why it's a serious problem in this particular medium of entertainment.
