The Punisher, Marvel Comics notorious vigilante was ported to Capcoms CPS1 16 bit arcade platform in 1993, and featured better than average controls vs previous beat 'em up titles from Capcom, such as with Final Fight, where the controls seemed sluggish, and game play was much slower.

Although faster than previous titles, the game mechanics were very similar in fashion to other fighting games of the era, such as with the ability to pick up health and throw objects that are within reach, and the game had typical combo moves that players would expect from such a game.
