The Real Genius Of Helldivers 2 Has Nothing To Do With Story
What makes Helldivers 2 great is the well-thought-out progression system that deviates from the standard. Usually, video games use a vertical progression system that makes players stronger as they level up or progress through the game. While Helldivers 2 does this to an extent, at an early stage it moves to a horizontal progression system. Horizontal progression means that players can earn a variety of gear at a lower level and experience more freedom of choice.
As of now, all Stratagems are unlocked by level 25, even the best Stratagems Helldivers 2 has to offer. Even when Helldivers 2's new Patriot Exosuit was released, it was available at 25. Though this is not hard confirmation, examples like this show that new non-Warbond additions are likely to be widely available at release. Another wise move made by developers is giving access to higher-level Stratagems for free on occasion, thus letting lower-level players get a taste of future power.
Warbonds are the only part of Helldivers 2 that follows the vertical progression system. However, this system is still relatively easy to progress through and only locks a handful of weapons and gear out. Hypothetically, a player could never progress through any of the premium Warbonds and still excel at Helldivers 2. For those who do enjoy unlocking the premium Warbond gear, earning the medals to do so can be done easily by farming trivial missions or completing high-difficulty missions.
Helldivers 2 has a well-crafted and intriguing story to dive into, but the real genius of the game comes from entirely different features. As Helldivers 2 continues to dominate the gaming world in 2024, so does the development of the game itself. Regular updates with new content, enemies, and Stratagems have kept missions fresh. Meanwhile, once a month, a new Warbond is released that comes with three new armor pieces and primary weapons, along with a secondary weapon, grenade, and booster.
Helldivers 2's story is complex and constantly evolving but still simple enough to be understood. Super Earth is trying to extend its reach as far as possible and the two enemy factions at war with them are there for a reason. The Terminids were placed on planets as they produce the oil Super Earth desperately needs. The Automatons in Helldivers 2 are rumored to be Cyborgs or the Cyborgs' descendants that were originally part of Super Earth's working class, now fully robotic and trying to free their creators. The teased Illuminate faction seems to be the first rival Super Earth has faced in trying to stop its rapid expansion.
The proper balance between all the weapons and Stratagems is the engine that makes this excellent system work. Every weapon in Helldivers 2 has set stats that can be seen, like armor penetration, damage, and fire rate. However, there are hidden stats for each weapon that were originally going to be shown but are obscured for the sake of ease. These hidden stats make what may appear to be trash guns into serviceable weapons and bring the level of each gun up. Thus, while some guns may be slightly better than others, no one largely stands above the rest.
Stratagem balance comes in the roles each one fulfills. While there is some overlap, Stratagems serve different purposes and can be better in other missions. For example, Eradicate missions are easier with large numbers of Sentry turrets because battles are stationary and more defensive. In contrast, missions that require running around the map are better suited to Eagle or Orbital Stratagems that give instant impact. Though the Stratagems are flexible and allow for the same to be used regardless of mission, the great balance of each allows for any play style to be effective.
